READING IS FUNDAMENTAL
Reading performance involves knowing and using foundation skills. Five basic foundation skills are essential for
reading excellence at all academic levels:
Phonics Skills - Foundation for pronouncing words.
Structural Analysis Skills - Base for decoding multisyllable words.
Vocabulary Development - Essential for all curriculums.
Developmental Speed - Fluency.
Comprehension - End result of reading
The acquisition of requisite reading skills provides the framework for reading excellence that, when applied to
academic studies, supports learning.
Dyslexia, a term oftentimes used to indicate reading difficulties, suggests that specific reading errors exist and
interfere with the reading process. The following is a list of reading errors that suggest dyslexia:
Letter reversals - Letters pronounced and/or written backward.
Letter transpositions - Verbally pronouncing and/or writing letters out of order.
Distractibility - Attention drawn away from what is being read.
Short attention span - Inability to remain on task.
Phonological delay - Difficulty associating letters/sounds to develop words.
Memory retention - Inability to maintain letters/sounds in long term memory system.
Processing difficulties - Hesitations and regressions (halting and repetitive reading).
Poor coding skills - Loses place when reading.
Inability to read in 'thought units' - Slow, one-word-at-a-time reading.
Limited use of imagery - Inability to visualize what is read.
Reading difficulties do not miraculously disappear; to improve reading performance, a prescriptive plan is essential.
Our plan begins by asking two questions: (1)What are you doing? (2)What should you be doing to improve reading
performance? By identifying reading errors and teaching, reinforcing, and stabilizing appropriate reading skills, reading
performance can produce better academic and job performance.
